Description of the architectural firm

Founded in 2005 by Stephan Chevalier and Sergio Morales, Chevalier Morales is focused on creating a contemporary architecture that is sensitive and responsible in many ways. They are sensitive to the intrinsic qualities of materials, nuances of light, and spatial subtleties, to intentionally shape the spaces people move within. They are equally attuned to the needs, ideas, and comfort of the individuals who will inhabit their buildings, while at the same time, their designs are responsive towards their communities and contextual environments. Chevalier Morales’ interventions address today’s environmental challenges such as energy waste, pollution, global warming, and depleting drinking water reserves, not through aesthetic trends but rather as a fundamental responsibility.

In this era of information, globalisation, and instantaneity, architectural approaches are vast and varied.  Alongside western twentieth century values like multiplicity, timelessness, lightness, speed, and precision that remind the partners of the new millennium1, concepts such as movement, territory and identity are also emphasized. The day to day creative approach envisions the building as a physical intervention that goes beyond its own constructed framework to influence the territory and identity of its individuals and communities. Alike, their work is inspired from a broad understanding of the social, cultural, and economic context of a project to further elicit a critical commentary.

Conscious of being generalists in a construction industry where specialization is increasingly common, Stephan Chevalier and Sergio Morales consider their role as architects to be like that of a conductor, a coordinator, a leader.  They gather people around a common social adventure and ensure that the final product has the rigor, consistency and aesthetic qualities sought out at the beginning of the design phase.  The way today’s architecture is produced, paired with the conditions of the construction industry, the architect is required to think globally while keeping the final product in mind

In Situ + DMA, in collaboration with Vlan Paysage, Kelvin Emtech, Latéral, Équipe Laurence

Description of the architectural firm

In Situ: Recipient of the Prix de Rome in Architecture (Canada Council for the Arts, 2001), the collective in situ atelier d’architecture works, since more than 25 years, to define a multidisciplinary architectural practice: furniture, interior design, installation, museography, residential, cultural and commercial architecture, and urban design. This approach allows the studio to develop robust and original concepts generated from a global vision.  Catalyst in the creative process, the notion of site is taken on as active, spatial, and temporal data. Recognized for the clarity of their design, and the highly refined signature of their projects, in situ attributes an undeniable importance to the quality of the materiality of its projects, where attention is given to the most minute details of design. Its capacity to see and read the city in a prospective manner allows the firm to cultivate new visions of urban development.

Saunders Architecture, Bourgeois Lechasseur architectes, Option Aménagement, Stantec

Description of the architectural firm

Saunders : A trans-Atlantic practice, with projects throughout Scandinavia and Europe, as well as across North America, Saunders Architecture is well known for its highly contextual approach and a deep-rooted respect for the relationship between its buildings and the natural world. Led by a strong contemporary design sensibility, the studio believes that architecture must play an important role in creating place by using form, materials, and texture to help evoke and shape memory and human interaction. Projects have encompassed original residential work, cultural commissions, and the hospitality sector, including the landmark Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland.

Bourgeois / Lechasseur : The architecture of Olivier Bourgeois and Régis Lechasseur explores form and light while offering users a succession of discoveries throughout the project. Backed by an efficient work methodology and a diverse team, the architectural firm has been making its mark in Quebec City and the Magdalen Islands since 2011.

Driven by the desire to design dynamic projects for the benefit of the user, our approach is based on the search for contemporary, realistic and sensitive architecture, inspired by striking landscape elements. The subtle work on form guides each of our projects. Exploration and the sequence of discoveries throughout the project are paramount, whatever the scale. For us, it’s important not to reveal everything at first glance, and for architecture to offer several levels of reading.
